Travelogue Scotland
July 2005
It was
to be a trial! The three of us, Tina & I and our witness of marriage Charley,
would be doing a roundtrip of Scotland
together for the next two weeks. We landed in London-Stansted because the
flight to Scotland
would have cost us ten times as much! We drove to Glasgow in 7 hours time. It was damn hot – 35°
C and we were totally worn out when we arrived! Our booked room had been given
to some other people, “Oh, I’m sorry!” Well, he did get us another room just on
the next block. The next day the temperature had dropped to 15° C and we
started our sight seeing tour of Glasgow.
It ended at 1 pm because it started raining cats and dogs, so that we just
slipped into the next pub and had ourselves a Guinness or two…
The rain
would cancel a lot of our planned activities during this vacation. It actually
always hit us while we were visiting the most beautiful spots in Scotland. We wanted
to get out of the car and feel the mystic magic of a stone circle on the Orkney Islands but the only thing we could do was actually
take shelter behind the rocks! Driving along the Isle of Skye – the most
beautiful place in Scotland
in my opinion – it didn’t only rain – no, no – we had so much fog that we didn’t
see anything at all – pretty depressing at times!
The pubs
were fantastic and you could get Guinness everywhere – what a great country! And
we did have our daily share – let me tell you! We also visited one distillery after
another: Famous Grouse (Glen Turret), Macallan, Dalmore, Highland Park, and Talisker. Dalmore was the
best of them all. The tour didn’t cost anything and you got to taste the whisky
in all its different processing stadiums. Famous Grouse was something for „tourists“
– well, actually more for children...
We did
get to hike once and promptly lost our way – well, only a little bit! On the
day before last Tina and I had our best experience of the whole vacation
together. We got to go horse riding on Clydesdales, although Max standing 18.3
hands high and weighing almost a ton could’ve easily been a Shire Horse! Oh my
God - could he gallop – like a berserker – up to the Highlands,
into the ocean and through the forest – the ground shook and trembled and my
heart beat faster at the minute! Such power and glory! Annie from the Heavy
Horses of Scotland had her fun with us. This horse ride was to change our
further life – we decided to buy ourselves our own horse – a Shire Horse…
Scotland was more than great but I guess we
won’t be visiting again due to the extreme crappy weather, although hiking on Islay from distillery to distillery would be kinda nice…
